Why Most Laundry Detergents are Scarier than Freddy Krueger

Why Most Laundry Detergents are Scarier than Freddy Krueger

Clean and fresh smelling laundry is important because you want to smell and look good. And, you don’t want to spend a lot of time and effort on laundry. So, you probably just pick up whatever laundry detergents on sale at the grocery store thinking that the products must all be safe and effective.

What you don’t know is that most conventional laundry detergents contain some pretty scary ingredients. Well, maybe not as scary as Freddy Krueger, but right up there.

Plus, you may not know that no regulatory body is ensuring that what goes into your laundry detergents is safe for you and the environment.

Pretty scary, right?

Here’s what you need to know about conventional laundry detergents and how to find safer laundry supplies as innocuous as Mister Rogers.

Why Opt for Natural Laundry Detergents?

Let’s start with the basics. How do you know what’s in your laundry detergent?

Well, this is a tough one. Why? Because the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the regulator of cleaning and laundry products and soap, has lax labeling regulations.

How lax? The CPSC gives manufacturers significant leeway on disclosing ingredients; they can list all, none or some of the ingredients. So, if a product included 20 ingredients, all 20 might be listed, or maybe just 5. It’s even acceptable not to list any ingredients according to CPSC regulations.

Here’s what the EPA has to say about cleaning product labeling requirements.

“Unlike food products, manufacturers of chemical products are not required to list ingredients on their containers or make them public.”

It’s troubling that ingredients aren’t included on the label, isn’t it?

What About Product Safety Testing?

Most people think products are safety tested or at least that the product ingredients have been approved for use by a regulatory body. But in reality, no requirement exists for cleaning and laundry product manufacturers to do safety testing.

The EPA has this to say about the lack of product safety testing.

Not welcome news, right?

Your Average Laundry Detergent Looks Like This

The Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) has a great site to decode product labels and ingredients. Check out the EWG Cleaning Guide here. Here’s a popular laundry detergent with a score of F. It’s a typical score for your average big brand laundry detergent.

As you can see below, the product has ingredients causing High Concern around Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity, Moderate Concern with Asthma/Respiratory and Some Concern with Cancer, Skin Allergies & Irritation & Environment.

Compare these results with a non-toxic, safe laundry powder. It’s proof that you don’t need to sacrifice your health for cleanliness.

It is possible to create laundry soap that is as innocent as Mister Rogers.
